- Description Share Post Out of this World Poems to make you laugh, smile and think Michael Rosen, drawings by Ed Vere (HarperCollins) ‘Cat-a-tat-tat/ Tat-a-cat-cat// I’m over here/ Im over there/ I’m flat on the ground/ I’m in the air’. We’re the family cat, then again, we’re the red blood cell whose work is to ‘offload some oxygen.’ Michael Rosen and Ed Vere present Out of this World. This collection from the former Children’s Laureate poems return to familiar themes such as his childhood. For example, he compares letters. It seems his brother ‘used to get/ letters‘ while he ‘didn’t get any./ None at all.’ The plan to reverse this situation is astounding! Then again, we’re considering ‘dreams of disasters‘. It seems these ‘popup/ on their own‘ or ‘flow into each/ other/ like water flowing from one pond/ into another pond’. There are themes that run forward too, for example contemplating life and school in March 30 AD 3758- seaweed, lots of seaweed. These run alongside travelling across years through people we’ve known through our own lives, contemplating the flow of time. Bookwagon is enthralled by Out of this World. In fact we’d suggest that this collection of Michael Rosen’s poetry is destined to become a home and family favourite. It’s ideal to read aloud, wonderful to read through and enjoy. What’s more, Ed Vere’s illustrations are nuanced and empathetic. Like Even My Ears are Smiling, for example, this title is essential!
